We
believe we are uniquely placed to present the Christian faith to our community
and city in a new and relevant way. We believe in the real and present
ministry of Jesus Christ in the forms of healing, teaching and reconciliation.
We aim to obey God's command to love Him with all our hearts, to love
one another as Christ has loved us, and to love our neighbours as ourselves.
We are committed to the authority of the Bible and to working together
in harmony with other Christians in the area. We welcome the ministry
and gifts of the Holy Spirit and see each church member as having a vital
role to play in the building of God's kingdom on earth. Our practice in
church life currently focuses on:
- Worship: To worship God in Spirit and in truth. To see worship
of God as humanity's highest calling. We want to draw people into a
living relationship with God using all contemporary means such as music,
song and drama.
- Teaching: We need to be taught how we should live and relate
to God. The Bible is God's means of instructing us and we believe in
applying what we learn to daily living, and bringing transformation
to our City and society in the process.
- Mercy: As Christians are required by God to show practical
mercy to all whom we meet. We do this by giving time, resources, prayer
and finances to those who are in real need, thus fulfilling Christ's
commission to 'preach good news to the poor' (St.Luke's gospel 4:18).
- Unity: We will work with all other Christians, who hold Jesus
as Saviour and Lord, for the well being of Christ's church. We will
endeavour to bring down the barriers that exist between different church
groups, and build bridges with our neighbours.
Formed in May 1999, CHS was a church 'plant' drawn primarily from the
larger congregation of Christ Church, Kenilworth. 58 adults and one ordained
minister set off to start a wholly new Anglican congregation - sent with
the full support of Christ Church, the St.John's Parish and our local
area Bishop, Rev. Christopher Gregorowski.
| We took over a run-down warehouse and
small office complex at 38 Raapkraal Road, Kirstenhof and spent
the next 6 months re-furbishing the site to make it usable for church
meetings and a wider Christian ministry. Much of this work was done
by our own church members. Since then, the buildings and the activities
of the church have developed and a viable Christian community has
now been established:
- A church building which can seat ± 300 people
- A Crèche facility
- 4 wendy houses and a large room within the church for approximately
150 children on a Sunday
- There are also 5 offices for administrative and pastoral staff,
plus a fully equipped kitchen
- A counselling centre
- A youth centre
